Contracting vampirism in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion drastically alters your gameplay, trading sunlight immunity for stat boosts and specialized magical abilities. While the affliction offers unique powers, the severe penalties of sun damage and social rejection often force adventurers to seek a permanent remedy. Understanding how the infection operates allows players to reverse the transformation before it fully takes over their character.

Preventing the Full Transformation Early

Before full-blown vampirism sets in, the condition begins as a standard disease called Porphyric Hemophilia. Players usually contract this illness after taking damage during melee combat with infected enemies in dark caves or ruins. If you act within three days of contracting the disease, resting in a bed will not trigger the transformation process.

You can easily cleanse the infection before sleeping by consuming a Cure Disease potion or visiting a chapel altar in any major city. Eating ingredients with a cure effect, such as Mandrake Root, also purges the affliction instantly. Taking these quick measures saves your character from starting the lengthy questline required to rid yourself of full vampirism.

Initiating the Vampire Cure Quest

Once you sleep after three full days with the disease, your character becomes a full vampire and standard cures will no longer work. To begin searching for a permanent fix, speak with a chapel healer or Raminus Polus at the Arcane University. They will direct you toward the Count of Skingrad, Janus Hassildor, who shares a personal interest in finding a cure.

Count Hassildor reveals that his infected wife requires a cure and directs you to a mysterious witch named Melisande living in Drakelowe. Locating Melisande initiates the extensive quest known as Vampire Cure, which demands considerable effort to complete. Gathering her requested ingredients serves as the primary hurdle between your character and a return to mortality.

Gathering Melisande's Required Ingredients

Melisande demands five empty Grand Soul Gems before she will even begin brewing the potion for you. Finding these soul gems requires searching alchemy shops, mage guilds, and dungeon loot containers across Cyrodiil. After delivering the gems, she provides a list of rare ingredients including Nightshade, Garlic, and Bloodgrass.

In addition to rare herbs, Melisande requires special reagents such as the blood of an Argonian and the dust of a powerful vampire. Obtaining the blood involves using a specialized dagger on any living Argonian citizen or bandit. Once all required components are turned in to Melisande, she brews two potions after a brief waiting period.

Consuming the Remedy and Managing Aftereffects

After Melisande finishes her preparations, she gives you one cure potion for Count Hassildor's wife and another for yourself. Drinking your potion immediately removes all vampiric traits, restoring your character to normal human mechanics. Your natural resistance to diseases returns to baseline, and sunlight will no longer harm your health.

Completing this quest permanently grants your character immunity to contracting vampirism ever again during that playthrough. With your mortality restored, you can freely explore the world during daylight hours without fearing environmental damage. Securing the cure allows you to resume normal quest progression while retaining all inventory and general skill gains.
